I love my grandmother’s macaroni and cheese. Like LOVE it.

The ingredients are simple enough (which I won’t disclose here ��), and I spent much of my childhood standing in her kitchen watching her make it so I could recreate it when I went back home. Those first few attempts on my own took some trial and error. I had the exact ingredients and followed the steps, and it was good. It still wasn’t quite hers. After a while, I understood the difference. Knowing the recipe mattered. Understanding how the ingredients and techniques worked together mattered even more as I adjusted the portions I needed to make. Over time, it started to taste more like hers. And eventually, it became mine. That process reminds me a lot of professional learning.

This year marks 100 years of honoring Black history. What began as Negro History Week in 1926, founded by Carter G. Woodson and his colleagues, grew into the Black History Month we recognize today. The original intent remains as urgent as ever: to elevate histories, voices, and contributions that have too often been marginalized or omitted altogether. This Black History Month , I keep coming back to the power of intentional visibility in our classrooms. What we choose to elevate matters. What we normalize matters. And what we make space for shapes how students see themselves and the world around them. That idea followed me even outside of school. Watching the Super Bowl halftime show featuring Bad Bunny, I was struck by its layers of symbolism, culture, and history embedded in the performance. It was a reminder that representation is never accidental. When history, identity, and perspective are honored intentionally, the result is powerful.

Mirrors, Windows, and Doors

The “Mirrors, Windows, and Doors” metaphor captures this work well in classrooms.

Mirrors show students themselves in what we teach and how we teach it, honoring their cultures, identities, and lived experiences, and affirming that their stories belong in academic spaces and beyond. Learning is something we do all the time; it is natural and organic.

My nieces love juice, so I always have some in my fridge when they come over. When my youngest niece was small, I was responsible for putting the straw into the juice box. Then, one day, she looked at me and said, “No, Auntie Nay. I can do it.” She missed a few times, the straws got bent, and we even lost a bit of juice, but she kept working to figure it out. She wanted to do it, and that was the motivation she needed.

That’s what learning looks like when there is a felt need or purpose to learn . We are more engaged when learning matters to us. This is true in life and should be true in school as well.

For students, authentic learning begins the same way, by hooking them with an open-ended, real-world problem or challenge that doesn’t have a single correct answer and actually requires complex thinking. This is where PBL shines. When students are given a meaningful problem to solve or a challenge to tackle, they develop a felt need to learn. They want the content because they need it to move forward. That shift from compliance to curiosity is essential for learning! This isn’t about letting go of teaching; it’s about facilitating learning with intention.

How PBL Turns Engagement into Learning (Not Just Activity)

Strong PBL is designed, not improvised. Regardless of which “P” you lean into—problem-, project-, place-, phenomena-, profession-, or pursuit-based learning—the structure matters. Six key phases guide the experience :

Build Background Knowledge Without Making Assumptions

When it comes to supporting English Language Learners, we often hear about “activating prior knowledge.” But what if the knowledge we assume students have . . . isn’t there yet? Or, more importantly, what if it looks different from what we expect?

The Equity Lens: What We Assume Shapes What We Design

Background knowledge is, at its core, an equity consideration. When teachers design units, it’s natural to lean on what we think students already know. Yet those assumptions, often shaped by our own experiences and exposures, can unintentionally create barriers, especially for multilingual learners and students whose life experiences and cultures differ from our own. By making background knowledge visible and accessible, we open the door for every student to enter the learning.

So pause and ask:

What vocabulary and background knowledge am I assuming students bring into this unit?
Why do I suspect they’d know it?
Do any of these terms or concepts assume shared cultural understanding?

These aren’t small questions. They’re design questions. And they help teachers shift from deficit thinking (“Students don’t know enough”) to asset-based thinking (“Students bring knowledge that looks different from what I planned for”).

Beyond Activation: Build Background Knowledge for ELLs

For English Language Learners, it’s about building prior knowledge. That doesn’t have to happen all at once. When teachers weave background-building moments throughout a unit, learning stays responsive and social.

Consider how you might:

– Start with visuals. Show a photograph, diagram, or short video clip to preview new concepts. Ask students what they notice to draw on their observations and curiosity.
– Design benchmark lessons to introduce ideas and connect vocabulary to the concepts students will be learning during the unit. Plan strategic points throughout the unit for the benchmark lessons to thread concepts and skills for students.
– Integrate peer-to-peer conversations. Pair students together to discuss visuals or videos prior to sharing as a whole class. Utilize sentence frames (a great resource for ELLs), such as “I noticed that . . .” or “I think this shows . . .” to support participation and build confidence.
– Utilize AI tools. Your AI chatbot of choice can provide simple explanations or summaries in students’ native language, generate visuals that show concepts in different cultures, or even provide background information for students to discuss.
– Make thinking visible. Use concept maps, anchor charts, or collaborative slidedecks for students to add images or examples that tie to new vocabulary and concepts. This can support students in seeing how ideas connect throughout the unit.

Building background knowledge isn’t frontloading; it’s threading context through the unit. When students see their cultures, languages, and experiences reflected in examples, they connect more deeply and learn more meaningfully.

Explicit Language Instruction — In addition to support from ENL teachers, classroom teachers can provide direct English language instruction. This could involve teaching phonology (sounds of the language), morphology (word formation), syntax (sentence structure), semantics (meaning), and pragmatics (language in context). Offering explicit instruction helps ELL students build their language skills more effectively.

Use questioning techniques that promote higher-order thinking, covering comprehension, application, connections, synthesis, and metacognition. The Dilemma of Low Student Engagement

Classrooms have changed immensely over the past few years, from curricular needs, to social and emotional development, to state mandates. A pressing concern looms over classrooms worldwide: the disengagement of students. The correlation between lack of student engagement and low academic achievement has become a prevalent issue, challenging educators to reevaluate their approaches. However, the key to unlocking student potential lies in understanding and nurturing the cognitive processes of executive function . We partner with schools to support educators in understanding the importance of building students’ executive function skills to create more engaging classrooms.

Understanding Executive Function

Executive function encompasses a set of 40 skills, including managing time, paying attention, switching focus, planning and organizing, regulating emotions, and more. All of these are extremely important in learning. These skills are developed in the brain’s prefrontal cortex, which develops from ages 4 to 25. Our sister company, IDE Corp. , and president, Dr. Nancy Sulla , teaches us that there are seven categories related to executive function : cognitive flexibility, working memory, inhibitory control, planning, reasoning, problem solving, and self-awareness. Dr. Nancy Sulla states in her book Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement , “We know that executive function skills are necessary for making sense of classroom instruction and that, through targeted experiences, teachers can contribute to the growth of the prefrontal cortex and executive function skills (Sulla, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement , 2018).” Contrary to common belief, students are not inherently born with fully developed executive function; instead, it is a skill that requires explicit teaching and continuous practice.

Executive function is woven through every aspect of school. To be successful, students need to be able to manage their time, pay attention, change their focus, plan, organize, reflect, and regulate themselves throughout their day. If a principal were to accompany a new student with a fractured arm into the classroom, the teacher would adjust to support the learner in light of the physiological challenge. No educator would advise the student to “try harder” when attempting to reach for an object with a broken arm. Similarly, the expression “try harder” should not be directed at students with an underdeveloped prefrontal cortex. Encouraging a child with memory difficulties to “try harder” proves ineffective and detrimental to the student’s self-perception. Addressing deficits through purposeful activities and structures is more likely to result in increased student engagement within a relatively short time frame (Sulla, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement , 2018).

On top of the many demands of teachers falls the responsibility for developing students’ executive function skillset. However, many teachers feel unprepared to develop these skills in their learners, and/or feel they don’t have the time. What is the root cause behind diminishing engagement levels? Could it be teacher burnout, state mandates, parent pressure, or a combination of this, and more? As technology evolves and distractions multiply, teachers face the challenge of maintaining students’ focus in the classroom.

Consider students deeply immersed in a video game, actively learning to advance through various levels. These involved students exhibit executive function skills such as initiating and persisting in a task , explaining their apparent fascination with the game. They adeptly follow multiple step s to master the game, simultaneously thinking about multiple concepts related to challenges, requirements, scoring, and obstacles. While navigating the game, they can discern similarities and differences , categorize information , and distinguish between helpful and distracting or harmful elements. This cognitive flexibility allows them to successfully navigate the game. These executive function skills of engagement are transferable to any situation where students are fully absorbed (Sulla, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement , 2018).
